Public Policy/Legislative Summer Internship, Summer 2014

This is a full-time, paid internship opportunity for the Summer 2014 semester. The selected intern will learn about important public policy issues and gain experience in state government and with the legislative and budgeting processes. The internship is an inside look at how government operates in Harrisburg, giving the intern an invaluable experience and a chance to explore further opportunities in government.
Duties and responsibilities range from conducting legislative issue research for a senate office to assisting senate staff in analyzing legislation, evaluating funding needs of state departments, communicating with constituent groups, providing research memoranda on special requests by the senator and staff, and attending meetings with the Senator or staff. The intern will have the opportunity to meet with constituent and special interest groups and to be involved in writing legislation and amendments resulting from these meetings. The intern also will participate in budgeting process, including maintaining financial spreadsheets, preparing materials for agency budget hearings and contributing to power point presentations and tracking legislation necessary for implementation of the final budget.
This internship will allow the selected student to hone writing and oral communication skills, improve research abilities, sharpen the ability to analyze and summarize legislation, gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative and budgeting process, develop the ability to draft legislative language, acquire knowledge of state issues, and experience a professional work environment. The summer 2012 intern, a Penn State Political Science major, also noted this is a wonderful networking experience, allowing the intern to meet and interact with professionals in a range of positions in state government.
