AFAM 110 (web) – Introduction to African American Studies:
With an emphasis on the historical movement toward Black Liberation and with a deep appreciation of African American humanity and complexity, this course serves as an introduction to African American Studies both as a general scholarly concept and as a particular academic field. Accordingly, the class will consider the ideas and careers of intellectual forerunners and activists such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, Stokely Carmichael, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Angela Davis, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Toni Morrison. In addition, students will examine the formation and history of African American Studies as a formal entity on college campuses and speculate about the direction of African American Studies in the Age of Obama and beyond.
