Special Collections Library and Department of Digitization, Conservation, and Preservation Internship

We will offer an overview of the University Libraries’ Special Collections Department and the Digitization, Conservation, and Preservation Department, as well as the opportunity to work on hands-on projects and to learn the basic principles and procedures of conserving rare books and documents under the direction of the Senior Book Conservator.
The Intern will have the experience of learning about preservation and conservation principles and procedures and will learn specific methods in proper storage and handling, the environment, appropriate exhibition display, conservation principles, and some minor conservation procedures. The Intern will help preserve Special Collections materials by making custom storage housings, such as phase boxes for rare books, and will participate in conservation projects such as encapsulation and humidifying and flattening documents. The Intern will be given articles on preservation and conservation methods to read, will attend lectures and instructional sessions, and will be encouraged to pursue a more in-depth study of an issue of specific interest to the Intern.
