Vermont Youth Tomorrow places A*VISTA members across Vermont in effective anti-poverty initiatives to promote hope, justice, and wellbeing of all Vermont youth and families. Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management.
Our activities are based in farm-fresh food rescue to reduce food waste on Vermont farms and increase consumption of wholesome, regionally produced foods by our state’s more vulnerable residents. We engage cross-sector partners and citizens in achieving our mission. We direct surplus crops to institutions serving vulnerable populations; the young, sick, elderly, incarcerated, and food-insecure.
Majority of recipients are considered low-income by the agencies serving them. We strive to create social change by using food as a tool for doing so. Providing high quality, nutritious foods to folks who may otherwise lack access impacts personal health and the ability to focus and function in a stable way. Our programs have also engaged alternative populations, i.e. incarcerated citizens. We have confidence that engaging any and all citizens can positively impact an individual’s well-being and their ability to engage with community in a safe and gratifying way, likely to lead to healthier life choices and interactions.
Through dedicated focus on program development and stabilization, an A*VISTA member will fill vital capacity building needs so that our programs will perform as envisioned, impacting the effects of poverty. This will provide us the ability to share our successes with a diverse set of stakeholders. As a young and innovative non-profit on the forefront of building a new segment of our region’s food system we will benefit greatly from the addition of a fresh perspective and the energy an A*VISTA member is bound to bring into the team.
