We’ve all heard about the power of networking and how Penn State’s Alumni Association is one of the largest in the country. But how many of us know how to actually approach networking, with alumni or anyone else, for that matter? I had a chance to talk with Liberal Arts alumnus Randy Houston, Senior Counsel of the Business and Legal Affairs division of NBC Sports Group, about networking, and I got his advice on how to approach it as a recent alumna myself.
As Randy noted during our conversation, networking is a way for individuals to connect with alumni, professionals in the field in which they hope to work, or other adults to discuss just about anything – your undergraduate education or alma mater, current events, or prospective opportunities. Randy helps define what networking actually is and explains why we should be networking during our undergraduate careers. He also discusses when and where to network, how to appropriately interact in different types of situations, and how to avoid some common networking mistakes. Check out any (or all) of the videos in the series to hear Randy’s networking advice and tips, and learn why connecting with others, no matter who they are, is so important.
