May is just around the corner, and with a new spring season comes the real world! Are you ready for 40-hour work weeks and being a young professional? If you’re still unsure of your future career in May, or even in years to come, don’t forget to refer back to the many services offered by Penn State to help you on your way.

Alumni Career Services

Alumni Career Services provides many of the same opportunities as undergraduate Career Services yet they take advantage of the wide geographical ranges of their alumni and provide services accordingly. They offer individual counseling, resume reviews, and career resources.

  • Nittany lion Alumni Career Network: An online job board that allows alumni to post resumes and search for job openings.
  • On-Campus Interviewing: Employers are brought to campus to conduct information sessions and hold interviews for entry-level positions.
  • Career Events: Throughout the year in-person and online networking events are held to connect alumni from across the country to help advance or change their careers.
  • Recent Graduate Events: Throughout the summer, Alumni Chapters throughout the country host welcome home events for recent graduates. It is a great way to network in a relaxed environment. Dates will be released soon.

Make sure to update your LinkedIn profile and join The Penn State Alumni Association’s page. This will connect you with other alums throughout the world that you can network with, ask advice, and learn about new career opportunities.

Alumni JOBSearch Webinar

This four-session JOBSearch Webinar program helps Penn State alumni gain the tools they need to search for new jobs. Information includes resume writing, interviewing, and networking.

LionLink

Now that you’ve graduated, you can register as an alumnus on the online networking site LionLink. Career Coaches on the site provide valuable information and advice on jobs and careers.

And don’t forget, if you still haven’t filled out your Graduating Senior Survey, do so as soon as possible!

Earth Hour Recycling Challenge

Congratulations to all of the Liberal Arts buildings who participated in the first ever Penn State Earth Hour Challenge. Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement where people from over one hundred countries switch off their lights for one hour in promotion of sustainability and awareness about climate change. In conjunction with Penn State’s Third Annual Earth Hour Celebration, sponsored by Eco Action, the buildings of the College of the Liberal Arts took to tallying their recycling habits in an effort to be named the Greenest Building, or at least in terms of trash!

Eco Action would like to thank all who participated and supported our efforts for planning a fantastic event. Penn State and the new Mobius program are a great step in having a greener and more sustainable tomorrow, and it all starts with the flick of a switch and the tossing of a bottle into a recycling bin!

The buildings and people who participated in this year’s Earth Hour Challenge, spanning March 24-28, recycled and composted over 3,710 items in one week! Congratulations to all!

Prepare for Spring Career Days

Spring Career Days is right around the corner! If you are still looking for a summer internship of full-time position, make sure to participate in the week’s events and attend the Non-Technical Majors Day on Wednesday, March 26 from 11am-4pm at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Career Services will be hosting several on-campus workshops in preparation for the Career Fair.

  • March 18 | 4:00pm: Resume Tips for Non-Technical Majors
  • March 18 | 5:15pm: Interviewing Tips for Non-Technical Majors
  • March 19 | 4:00pm: Finding Your Top 5: Effectively research the organizations you want to talk to at the fair.
  • March 19 | 5:15pm: After the Handshake: What to say to recruiters when you meet them at the fair.

Resumania: Get your resume reviewed by HR professionals anytime between 11:00am and 3:00pm on Tuesday, March 25 at the Bank of America Career Services Center.

Spring Career Days is a networking and recruiting event for all Penn State students and alumni in all majors at all campuses searching for full-time, internship, or co-op positions. The fair spans two days, each covering different areas of interests and majors. Remember to prepare in advance for the fair by updating your resume, looking up employers, and brushing up on your interview skills.

Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree

This workshop will prepare Liberal Arts majors to address challenges they encounter in the job search and discover their selling points. Students will also learn how to translate their skills to resumes and career fairs, as well as identify the ways to approach employers at these career fairs.

This event is co-sponsored by Penn State Career Services and College of the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network.

Tel Akko Archaeology Field School Enrichment Fund

Liberal Arts majors participating in the summer Tel Akko Total Archaeology Field School Program are encouraged to apply for the Tel Akko Enrichment Fund!

Application Instructions:

To apply for the Tel Akko Total Archaeology scholarship, Liberal Arts majors should submit an enrichment application via the online Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds Application System.  Please clearly indicate in your application materials that you are also applying for the Tel Akko Total Archaeology Scholarship in addition to the general Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds. Summer Enrichment Funds applications are due May 1st.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Current undergraduate or graduate student;
  2. Formal acceptance to the Tel Akko Penn State Archaeological Summer Field School;
  3. At least one declared Liberal Arts major;
  4. Minimum GPA of 2.5

Selected students will be expected to:

  • Write a letter describing your experience on the dig (letter should be submitted to the instructor of the program);
  • Provide links to any blog posts you may write as part of your participation in the excavation;
  • Complete one of three enrichment assignments to the Career Enrichment Network at the conclusion of the experience.

 

 

 

CGS Undergraduate Thesis Prize

Penn State’s Center for Global Studies will award two prizes of $500 each year to Schreyer Honors College undergraduates who have completed commendable thesis projects that advance a global perspective.

These awards are intended not only to recognize the excellent work of students who combine studies in the Liberal Arts with a concern for global issues, but also to encourage these students to continue their contributions to the field of global studies.

Eligibility

The award applicants must be students in the College of the Liberal Arts and have completed a thesis project in the College. The thesis, in addition to being a unique and significant contribution to the students’ particular field, should also demonstrate scholarly engagement within global studies.

Application:

Eligible applicants must submit the following materials via email to cgsinfo@psu.edu:

  • One chapter of the final, approved version of the thesis.
  • A 1 – 2 page statement by the student on the influence the thesis project has had on the student’s academic endeavors and future plans, as well as an indication of how the thesis project makes a contribution to global studies.
  • A statement of support from the thesis adviser.

Deadline:

All application materials must be received by Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Any documents received after that date and /or incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.

Graduating Seniors – Make the Most of Your Last Semester

While you are still here…

There are only a few short months left until spring graduation, and after four years of tests, exams, activities, and events, are you ready to leave Penn State? Are all your classes in order, thesis almost done, and interviews on the horizon? For me personally, I’d like to postpone graduation for a few more months, but I know that there are great resources here on campus to help all seniors get out the door smoothly! Check out my list below and take advantage of these opportunities while you still can!

Career Fairs

Keep in mind some important dates of upcoming career fairs for those of you still looking for a position post-graduation.

People to People Career Fair (February 27, 2014) – This is a great opportunity to learn about jobs and internships in non-profits, the government, and human service agencies.

Spring Career Days (March 26, 2014) – Come out to the Spring Career Fair on its first day to learn more about companies looking for non-technical majors.

Careers for the Humanities March 29, 2014 – Students can network with alumni and learn about possible career paths and jobs that await them post-graduation.

Career Enrichment Network

  • The staff of the Career Enrichment Network can help with resume reviews, cover letters, and tips for job searching. You can schedule an appointment to meet with them through your Network Symplicity site. Keep in mind however their website does not list full-time positions so you will need to look elsewhere for those.
  • LEAD: Check out the Leadership Enrichment through Assessment and Development (LEAD) program that combines online-assessments and in-person interviews to find out and hone in on your strengths and weaknesses. It is a great tool to use when interviewing for jobs or graduate school.
  • Graduating Senior Survey: Keep an eye out for a survey from the College of the Liberal Arts asking about for feedback about your undergraduate experience at Penn State and your plans for after graduation.

Career Services

  • Make sure you take advantage of all of the resources Career Services has to offer before graduation. This is another great source for resume and cover letter reviews, but they also offer drop-in hours, drop-in counseling, and mock interviews.  Attending a career counseling session may expose you to valuable job search resources
  • Nittany Lion Career Network: Use this database to search for full time positions. You can also search for information sessions and on-campus interview schedules.
  • Lion Link: This online networking database connects students and alumni and assists in career coaching and the job search.
  • Senior Sunday: Hosted by Career Services this daylong conference offers you the chance to learn about key steps for post-graduation, including tips for finances and living in busy cities. You can also choose to stay for an etiquette dinner to prepare for interviews at public places.

And one last tip…don’t forget to update your LinkedIn profile to take advantage of the largest online networking site. Networking, exploring your interests and the job market, and creating your own opportunities and chances to become involved in more experiences are essential to any career decision and career planning process.
