Job Description
The Litigation Assistant position constitutes an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to the legal industry and hands-on experience working with the firm’s attorneys. Litigation Assistants at Kobre & Kim join case teams upon arrival and, working in close collaboration with Analysts and attorneys, are responsible for assisting their teams with various administrative tasks. General duties include, among others, organization and maintenance of electronic case files, preparation of documents for court proceedings and filings, development and implementation of organization systems on case teams, management of the production and receipt of case documents during discovery proceedings, review and analysis of primary and legal documents, preparation of attorney and client binders, assistance with pre-hearing and pre-trial materials, and coordination of in-person document delivery and collaboration with external vendors. Litigation Assistants develop a strong command of the practical and logistical foundations involved with legal work.
Job Qualifications
Litigation Assistants are typically high-performing college graduates. Candidates should possess a four-year college degree, a strong GPA, and excellent teamwork, communication, organizational, and creative and anticipatory thinking skills. Candidates should also demonstrate a willingness and ability to perform tasks in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Applications are encouraged from self-starting, highly-motivated individuals displaying an interest in exploring the legal industry and pursuing a career in law. Language skills, including Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese, while not necessary, are a plus. Litigation Assistants are expected to remain with the firm for a minimum of two years.

Penn State Pre-Law Info Sessions

Pre-Law Advising offers two different information sessions, a Pre-Law Orientation Session and an Applying to Law School Session. The sessions are both facilitated by the Pre-Law Adviser. They are limited to fifteen students to provide an atmosphere conducive to conversation and questions. Please read the descriptions and prerequisites of the two sessions carefully to determine which session is most appropriate for you.

Pre-Law Orientation Session:  Sessions are open to all students considering law school. First- and second-year students must attend a Pre-Law Orientation Session prior to scheduling an individual appointment with the Pre-Law Adviser or attending the Applying to Law School Session (see below).

Topics covered in the Pre-Law Orientation Session include:

  • Preparing for law school and strengthening your application now (even if you are not yet certain that you want to attend)
  • Skills required for law school
  • Learning about law school
  • Learning about the practice of law

Top 8 Tips for Fall Career Days 2017

Fall Career Days (September 12-14, 2017) is quickly approaching! Fall Career Days is a week of career fairs combined with some on-campus interviewing, information sessions, and workshops held by employers who are recruiting students on campus. The majority of the employers at Fall Career Days represent corporate America. If you are interested in working for a large corporation, the fair may be a fit for you.

There are lots of things you can do to make sure you are prepared for Fall Career Days. Here are our top 8 tips to get you started:

#8 Attend a Prep Workshop. Career Services and recruiters host workshops the week before the fair to help you prep for the fair. Attend sessions like Professional Tips for Non-Technical Majors (9/5), Resume Review Walk-in Hours (9/11) , & more to make sure you are prepared for the fair.

#7 Research the employers attending and make a top 5-10 list of those with whom you would like to meet. Here are a few companies to get you started in your research: Air Liquide, Amazon, Altria, Amica Mutual Insurance, AT&T, Bates White Economic Consulting, Capital One, City of Pittsburgh Careers, DEA, EY, Federal Reserve Board, IBM Corporation, Kohl’s, Liberty Mutual, MAXIMUS, National Air and Space Intelligence (NASIC), National Security Agency (NSA), Northwestern Mutual, PA State Police, Target, Teach for America, TransPerfect, US Postal Service, US Census Bureau, Vanguard, and Yelp.

#6 Search for open positions after you narrow your list of employers. You can search for open positions in Network Symplicity, Nittany Lion Career Network, and on the company’s website.

#5 Check for additional networking events. Many employers will be hosting on-campus events in addition to the career fair. Check the Network Symplicity and Nittany Lion Career Network calendars for details. Altria, Bates White, Deloitte, & Liberty Mutual are just a few employers who will hosting additional networking opportunities on campus.

#4 Practice your 30 second introduction. Speaking with recruiters at the career fair can be nerve-wracking, but preparing ahead of time can help! Remember to highlight your relevant skills and experiences, put your major in context, and express your interest in the organization! Here are some other helpful tips about approaching employers from a recruiter’s perspective.

#3 Have your resume ready to go. Take advantage of our walk-in resume review hours on Monday, September 11 from 9:00am-4:30pm in 101 Sparks Building. Make sure your resume highlights the skills and experiences most relevant to the companies you plan on speaking with. Be prepared to hand your resume to a recruiter, but also to apply online after the event!

Fall Career Days is quickly approaching (September 12-14, 2017)!  Fall Career Days is a week of career fairs combined with some on-campus interviewing, information sessions, and workshops held by employers who are recruiting students on campus.

Consulting Careers: The Advantages of a Liberal Arts Degree

Brandon Kreider (’16, MS/BS, HRER and LER) works for Deloitte Consulting in their Human Capital Practice. He specializes in organization transformation and talent to help clients understand their business challenges.

Consulting. You hear the word and think corporate finance, mergers, top business school graduates, and long hours. While you’re not completely wrong, there is a lot more to this career than that. With tens of thousands of extremely qualified applicants vying for the same few spots at top consulting firms across the country, I sometimes wonder, how did I end up as one of the fortunate few? Looking back, I think a significant portion of my success is thanks to my liberal arts degrees. More specifically, my undergraduate degree in Labor and Employment Relations and my graduate degree in Human Resources and Employment Relations.

The consulting industry is a confusing one for many people. While I could list all of the different “workstreams” and “deliverables” my team and I make for our clients, what consulting really boils down to is making complex situations easy to understand. These situations come in many forms, but mostly, they come from clients asking questions:

  • “We’re losing our best people to our top competitor. How do we fix it?”
  • “How do we upskill our employees so they understand the newest technologies?”
  • “This new supply chain technology is supposed to be a game changer. Is it worth the money? Should we implement it? How?”

Through these questions, we set out to understand the root cause of the problem and understand why the change is occurring. From there, we devise a plan to solve the problem and work hand in hand with our clients to implement it. This is where my passion for consulting stems: each day I’m able to help people solve problems and improve their businesses.

While reading this you may be wondering – did your time in the Liberal Arts program at Penn State prepare you for your job? Are you as prepared as those that came out of Smeal business school? Yes. Unequivocally, yes. A degree in the Liberal Arts prepares you to think critically, network, problem solve, and communicate eloquently. Through course work and time spent in leadership roles of school organizations, I built a network of professors, alumni, and classmates that I continue to rely on today.

My advice to you, no matter your career or professional aspirations:

  1. Appreciate your Liberal Arts degree, for it prepares you to take on the toughest challenges in any industry.
  2. Take time to build a relationship with your classmates and professors – these years allow you to build bonds that will last well beyond your time at Penn State.
  3. Get involved – there are few better ways to learn to lead than by doing it. Find an organization you are passionate about and volunteer to take on leadership roles. It will prepare you for success in many ways.

Land O’Lakes Global Food Challenge

Land O’Lakes, Inc. Offers Global Internship Opportunity for Class of 2020 for 2017-2018

Land O’Lakes, Inc. is welcoming students in the class of 2020 the opportunity to apply for the Global Food Challenge Emerging Leaders for Food Security program.
Current freshman (sophomores during the 2017-2018 academic year) interested in exploring issues in agriculture and who are inspired to help solve the global food challenge are encouraged to apply for the program that runs from December 2017 through August 2018.

The fellowship offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain experience outside the classroom during the year-long program including:

  • An 11-week paid summer internship in summer 2018
  • Travel to Washington D.C. and a to-be-determined global destination as a part of the summer internship (included in the program)
  • Working with a team, university mentors and Land O’Lakes employees to develop a proposal that solves a real-world agricultural issue for Land O’Lakes, Inc.
  • Participation in a number of special events between December 2017 and October 2018
  • Serving as an ambassador for agriculture and the food industry

Eligibility requirements

  1. Expected graduation date of May 2020 or December 2020
  2. Must be available for 11-week Summer Experience May – August 2018
  3. Must be eligible to work in the United States

7 Tips for the Start of the School Year

We hope you had a great summer and that you’re looking forward to a great fall semester. While it’s hard to imagine kicking off an internship or full-time job search as you’re just getting settled into your classes for the semester, well…you need to get working on those searches as soon as possible.  

With that in mind, here’s an easy checklist of 7 things to do as soon as possible:

  1. Create or log into your Network Symplicity account and update your profile, especially class standing, expected graduation, major(s) and GPA.  If your profile is not current, then you may show up as ineligible to apply for some opportunities.
  2. Check out the Fall Career Days list of employers and start researching those you want to visit with during the event.
  3. Update your resume with any summer internship, volunteer, or global experiences and upload it to your Network Symplicity account for review.
  4. Update your internship information in Network Symplicity.  Had an internship this summer and didn’t report it yet?  You can still log in and add it to your profile at any time.
  5. Get a handle on the strengths you can offer potential employers by taking the StrengthsFinder® on-line assessment.
  6. View our calendar of events in Network Symplicity to make sure you don’t miss out on anything for the semester! Events already quickly approaching include: Liberal Arts Undergraduate Festival, Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree, Fall Career Days, Education Abroad Fair, & more!

Did you know that 97% of applicants received enrichment funds last year? Don’t hesitate to submit your application!

Full consideration given to applications received by September 1, 2017. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so apply ASAP! Applications will be considered after this priority deadline on a funds-available basis. The Student Engagement Network Grant Program

The Student Engagement Network Grant Program is now accepting applications for Fall 2017!

The SEN will be awarding grants of up to $3,000 to support student engagement experiences. Examples include financial support for unpaid internships or research opportunities, living expenses, travel costs, and conference fees. Grant funding can also be used to compensate a student working fewer hours in order to be involved in a student club or organization on campus.
