Interested in networking with Liberal Arts alumni? Want to receive assistance on your job and internship searches? Hoping to get advice about the future?

Apply to the Liberal Arts Alumni Mentor Program! Students are matched with alumni in a field related to their major and/or their career interests. Mentors work with students to reflect on their experiences and goals, develop new skills, and network for the future.

Applications will be accepted all summer and students are usually matched with a mentor within two weeks of completing the application and a short online orientation. Students should check their email regularly for program updates and requirements.

Early Decision Dates: Students are highly encouraged to apply early for spring programs. Complete applications will be reviewed, and acceptance decisions reached, approximately one month after the early decision deadlines:

  • May 1, 2018
  • July 15, 2018

Final Deadline: September 15, 2018.

Students interested in studying abroad in the spring should apply as early as possible to ensure their best chance of acceptance into their first choice program.

Travel Logistics Workshop

  • Tuesday, April 3, 2018
  • 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Meet with Penn State study abroad alumni! This session is led by the Penn State Education Abroad Peer Advisers who are study abroad returnees who have enjoyed their experiences so much that they volunteer their time to advise other students on education abroad. This is a very informal workshop that will work more like a discussion group. This is your chance to get the inside scoop on your program, meet other students participating in your program, learn more about the culture of your destination-city, discuss travel and packing tips, and much more! Students studying in the destinations below will be assigned a room in which you can break off into groups with other students attending your program.

Bridging Cultures

Come learn the basics of cultural differences that will help prepare you to have more successful and meaningful experiences overseas! During this workshop, we will discuss tips on how to navigate differing cultures successfully. Cultural awareness is vital to a successful cultural immersion, so come learn about some of the cultural situations you may encounter while overseas and learn how to navigate your new environment. This session will be led by Lauren Halberstadt, Manager of Student Engagement & Cultural Learning in Global Programs and Jim Sauls, Student Engagement Coordinator in Global Programs.

Maximize your upcoming study abroad experience by developing valuable professional skills that will enhance your future career. Join this workshop to learn strategies for proactively seeking career development opportunities while abroad and articulating your new skills to potential employers. This session will be led by Chelsea Keen from the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network, who is a career coach specializing in international experiences. 

Safety, Wellness, and Resiliency

  • Wednesday, April 18, 2018
  • 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

“What do I do if I get sick while abroad?”

“Who should I reach out to if I encounter problems?”

“I’m nervous about being away from home, what can I do to prepare myself?”

Focusing on health, safety and overall wellness, facilitators from Education Abroad, The Global Safety Office and Counseling Services will use practical examples and activities to highlight available resources for staying safe, and healthy while acclimating to a new culture. Students will walk away with a tool kit of techniques to handle the natural ups and downs of cultural immersion and be prepared to have a successful study abroad experience.

Students who attend a workshop, or multiple, will be entered in a drawing to win a prize.

Applications are open for Fall 2018 and Academic Year 2018-19 study abroad programs, and we urge you to begin the process of applying! If you are unsure where to start, you can begin by attending one of Education Abroad’s Study Abroad 101 sessions, which will give you an overview of the study abroad opportunities that we have and advice on the next steps to take. These sessions are held every Wednesday, and you can find a list of our upcoming dates and times under the Steps to Study Abroad on our website.

You can also take a look at Education Abroad on our website for some more research on programs that you might be interested in and funding for certain programs. You are also welcome to set up an appointment through Network Symplicity with the Liberal Arts Global Experiences Coordinator, Chelsea Keen, to discuss any initial questions you may have about the process.

The deadline for Fall 2018 and Academic Year 2018-19 is March 1.  You can find this under the How to Apply section of our website. Don’t wait to apply! Get a head start on your global adventure as soon as you can.

Spring 2018 Pre-Law Advising Sessions

Interested in law school and want to learn more?  Pre-Law Advising offers two different sessions, a Pre-Law Orientation Session and an Applying to Law School Session. Please read the descriptions and prerequisites of the two sessions carefully to determine which session is most appropriate for you.

Pre-Law Orientation Session (for 1st and 2nd year students):  First- and second-year students must attend a Pre-Law Orientation Session prior to scheduling an individual appointment with the Pre-Law Adviser or attending the Applying to Law School Session (see below).

Topics covered in the Pre-Law Orientation Session include:

  • Preparing for law school and strengthening your application now (even if you are not yet certain that you want to attend)
  • Skills required for law school
  • Learning about law school
  • Learning about the practice of law
  • Deciding whether to apply to law school
  • Pre-Law Advising resources

Spring 2018 Pre-Law Orientation Session dates:

Monday, January 29: 10:00–11:00 a.m.

Applying to Law School Session (for juniors and seniors):  This session is designed for juniors and seniors who are getting ready to apply to law school.   First- and second-year students who have attended a Pre-Law Orientation Session are also invited to attend but it may make sense to wait until junior year to attend this session so that the information is fresh in your mind when you are ready to apply. 

 Topics covered in the Law School Application Session include:

  • Introduction to the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
  • Strategies and options for LSAT preparation
  • Review of law school application timeline
  • Using lsac.org to apply to law school
  • Drafting personal statements/diversity statements/résumés/addenda
  • Obtaining strong letters of recommendation
  • Selecting/Evaluating law schools (brief intro to this topic)
  • Financing law school (brief intro to this topic)
  • Pre-Law Advising resources

Interested in traveling to West Africa over Maymester?

Earn credits and study abroad by enrolling in LING/AFR 497, Language in Africa, this spring.

This embedded course, which is a course taught on campus that includes a short-term embedded travel component, will be traveling to Benin in West Africa for two weeks during the Maymester.

Benin is a particularly interesting country because, while it’s official language is French, there are more than 50 languages regularly spoken in the country. Dr. Deborah Morton will be leading the course and has been conducting research in Benin for several years.

Summer Study Abroad Program in Peru – Open to All Majors

All majors are welcome in this Penn State faculty-led, interdisciplinary program that is based in lively Lima, Peru.
Students will become acquainted with STEM challenges and opportunities in Latin America. Learn how science and global engineering connect with other disciplines in a mixed cohort of Peruvian and Penn State students, while studying Spanish and experiencing Peru’s rich culture.
For 6 weeks, you will take 2 classes taught by Penn State and local faculty. Participants will gain cross-cultural competencies by investigating issues in global society and their future implications.
This program is designed to be the perfect blend of cultural immersion and interdisciplinary learning. Experience life as local residents do while you enjoy Peruvian cuisine prepared by your host family and practice your Spanish.
