Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships Upcoming Sessions

The Center for Global Studies is pleased to announce the competition for FLAS Fellowships for the Pennsylvania State University. FLAS Fellowships are authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and are administered by the U.S. Department of Education. They assist students in achieving competency in selected foreign languages and conducting research in related international and area studies.

FLAS Fellowships are awarded annually. The CGS will be awarding fellowships for Summer 2017 and for the Academic Year 2017-18. Fellowships consist of an institutional payment and a subsistence allowance. All FLAS awards are contingent upon the university receiving annual fellowship funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

Students in all fields of study are welcome to apply. Languages eligible for Penn State’s FLAS Fellowships are Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian.

International Internships & Fellowships Session: November 29

The various study abroad programs which have an experiential learning component will be highlighted, as will other international opportunities including undergraduate fellowships and international internships.

Six Things to Do During Thanksgiving Break

thanksgiving2Happy Thanksgiving! The semester is finishing up, and there are steps you can take to finish it strong! Here are Six Things to Do During Thanksgiving Break!

  1. Apply to the Liberal Arts Alumni Mentor Program to be matched with a mentor who can help you with skill development, career planning, and networking. Deadline: December 15, 2016
  2. Talk with your family about your plans to gain global experience in the new year – through study abroad, an international internship, or an international research experience. Summer study abroad application deadline: February 1, 2017.
  3. Submit your application for enrichment funds if you need support for a Spring 2017 internship, research, or global experience. Priority deadline: December 1, 2016.
  4. Get a handle on the strengths you can offer potential employers by taking the StrengthsFinder® on-line assessment.
  5. Mark your calendar for upcoming events like our International Internships & Fellowships Session on November 29 at 5:00 p.m. in 124 Sparks. Also, save the date for Liberal Arts Career Week January 16-20, 2017.

Student Spotlight: Alex Riviere in Kenya

For two weeks this summer 2016 I participated in the Community and Environmental Development (CED 499a) trip to the Children and Youth Empowerment Center (CYEC) in Nyeri, Kenya. In response to the dramatic “youth bulge” in the mid-2000s, the Kenyan government started to fund youth centers in areas where there were high densities of street children. The CYEC was started like this and is funded by a non-profit in the United States and the Kenyan Government. The center provides food, water, shelter, education and health services to 130 street youth in and around the Nyeri area. In addition, there is a microfinance program where they give small loans to some of the older kids to start businesses.

Throughout this semester, our class was in communication with the director of the CYEC. He gave us a few development initiatives that would improve conditions around the center. I was put in charge of helping conduct business development workshops as well as implementing a record keeping system with the goat and cow milk that the center produces.

I’d really like to be involved in international development in the future. There is a lot of potential that is hindered by lack of basic necessities and opportunities in developing worlds. This program was a great way to get see those obstructions firsthand, learn about a new culture and make some great friends.

I’d like to thank the College of the Liberal Arts for supporting me. It is a true privilege to be involved in a college that not only pushes its students to go engage in experiences abroad but also helps those experiences happen.

Academically, it was very interesting to apply the theory I learn in my Community and Environmental Development (CED) classes. We learn about how to approach a development project. A lot of development initiatives fail because NGOs don’t listen to the people they are trying to help. At the end of the day, they have lived there for their whole lives and understand the systems and culture much better than we ever will. So during our project, instead of doing things for people we worked with them to co-create and co-implement projects together.

French Film Series

Children who speak little to no French in France are placed in a special reception class. They are taught the language and other classes until they are ready to join their peers in regular classrooms.

 

Princeton in Latin America: Apply by November 7

Interested in a year of meaningful service in Latin America?

Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) is accepting online applications for the 2017-2018 fellowship year until November 7, 2016.

PiLA matches highly qualified recent graduates with partner nonprofits and NGOs throughout Latin America and the Caribbean for a year of full-time service. Fellowship positions and organizational missions are highly varied, and thus applications from all academic disciplines are welcome.  In 2016-2017, 42 PiLA fellows are serving with 24 organizations in 13 countries around the region.

Important qualifications include academic excellence and polished English-writing skills; demonstrated commitment to community service at home, abroad or both; foreign-language fluency (Spanish, Portuguese and/or French); knowledge of or experience in the region, or both; leadership skills; interpersonal and intercultural sensitivity; the flexibility to live at a subsistence level and adapt successfully to shifting circumstances during the fellowship; and a commitment to PiLA’s mission that extends beyond the year of service.

Fellows receive a monthly stipend to cover subsistence costs, according to local standards.

A few examples of our fellowship opportunities:

*   Teaching sustainability or technology at a middle school in Uruguay
*   Monitoring and Evaluation for nonprofits in the DR and Guatemala
*   Grant writing work in Guatemala
*   External Relations Coordinator at a college in Bolivia
*   Finance team member for an impact investment organization in Nicaragua
*   Writing business plans for entrepreneurs in Chile, Argentina, and Mexico
