University Fellowships Office STEM Week Begins October 17

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Week at the University Fellowships Office is coming up quickly! From October 17th through October 21st, the Office will be holding events to help promote STEM fellowship opportunities. Several Liberal Arts majors may qualify for some of these opportunities. See below for details.

Human Rights Fellowship, this summer in Prague!

The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation announces The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation Fellowship for Human Rights, a summer fellowship in Prague for undergraduate students studying in the United States. Founded as part of Havel@80, the annual fellowship program will offer students a two week, fully-funded opportunity to learn from and engage with organizations in the Czech Republic working to carry forward Havel’s legacy in the field of human rights.

Applicants Sought for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Center for Global Studies is pleased to announce the competition for FLAS Fellowships for the Pennsylvania State University.  FLAS Fellowships are authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and are administered by the U.S. Department of Education.  They assist undergraduate and graduate students in achieving competency in select foreign languages and conducting research in related international and area studies.

FLAS Fellowships are awarded annually.  The CGS will award ten fellowships (five undergraduate, five graduate) for the Academic Year 2015-2016 and ten fellowships (five undergraduate, five graduate) for Summer 2015.  Fellowships consist of an institutional payment and a subsistence allowance.  All FLAS awards are contingent upon the university receiving annual fellowship funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

Students in all fields of study are welcome to apply.   Languages eligible for Penn State’s FLAS Fellowships are Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian.

Evaluation of applications will begin on February 15, 2015, but all applications will be considered until funds are fully allocated.

Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows Program Accepting Applications

Located just outside of Washington D.C., The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows is a competitive five-and-a-half week summer leadership program that offers a small, select group of rising college juniors unparalleled opportunities in the nation’s capital and on the famous estate of America’s first president.

Program Dates: June 8-July 15, 2015

About the Program:
The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program invites undergraduate leaders from diverse academic disciplines to immerse themselves in leadership development programming inspired by the life and legacy of George Washington, and today’s foremost leaders. This select, small cohort of rising college juniors will engage in dynamic academic workshops, experiential activities, and a capstone project that fully utilizes the rich resources of Washington, D.C., the nation’s newest presidential library, and the famous estate of America’s first president.

This five-and-a-half week residential summer fellowship is designed to create the next generation of our nation’s top leaders. During this time, you will dig deep into a cause you believe in, interact with like-minded student leaders from across the country, and learn from the top corporate, military, government, and non-profit leaders in the nation. You will experience impactful personal growth, develop a network of  professional contacts, present a mission-oriented service project, and become a lifelong member of a connected and engaged community of program alumni. Set against the exciting backdrop of our nation’s capital and Mount Vernon, a vast variety of unparalleled cultural and networking opportunities await you.

Application Requirements:
The 2015 class of Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows will comprise a small cohort of rising college juniors, selected from the 5 regions of the United States. This regional selection process ensures Mount Vernon’s goal of gathering a diverse, dynamic group of Fellows from across the country.

Students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply:
-Currently enrolled rising college junior in good standing
-Demonstrated leadership ability and interest
-Cumulative GPA 3.4 or higher

Humanity in Action Fellowship Info Session

The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw.

The Urban Adamah Fellowship Now Accepting 2015 Applications

The Urban Adamah Fellowship, based in Berkeley, CA, is a three-month residential training program for young adults (ages 21–31) that combines urban organic farming, social justice training and progressive Jewish learning and living within the setting of an intentional community.

Through the operation of Urban Adamah’s one-acre organic farm and internships with social justice organizations, fellows gain significant skills, training and experience in all aspects of sustainable urban agriculture, community building, leadership development and urban food access.

Spring: March 1 – May 22, 2015

Summer: June 7 – August 21, 2015

Fall: September 1 – November 20, 2015

We accept 12­–14 fellows per season. Admission is on a rolling basis.

Mosaic Taiwan Fellowship Opportunity

Mosaic Taiwan is a fellowship exchange program during the summer for emerging US leaders wishing to gain firsthand experience of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Set up by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mosaic Taiwan program provides young students and professionals with interest in global affairs with the opportunity to explore the beauty of Taiwan’s natural environment, and to better understand its culture and society through extensive exchanges with local leaders from various fields. It also gives young leaders from Taiwan international exposure by fostering dialogue with their overseas counterparts.

Applications are due by February 21.

Become an Environment America Fellow

PennEnvironment is a statewide citizen-based environmental advocacy group focused on clean energy, clean air, clean water, and protecting open spaces.  PennEnvironment is part of the Environment America federation, a federation of 29 state-based groups with nearly 100 professional staff and more than 1 million members, activists and allies across the country.

Penn Environment is hiring full time organizers and advocates to start after graduation. The Fellowship Program is a two-year paid crash course in the nuts and bolts of environmental activism, organizing, advocacy and the type of institution-building that can sustain long-term battles.

Big Game Hunting (for Juniors and Sophs)

It has probably dawned on you already: being a Paterno Fellow puts students in an elite category–and sets them up for tremendous post-graduate opportunities. Like Marshall, Rhodes, Fulbright, Udall, Churchill, and Mitchell scholarships, fellowships, and awards (among others). Visit Penn State’s University Fellowship Office web site to learn more about these opportunities.

Because Paterno Fellows will graduate with honors, with service and leadership achievements, with dual majors (or 24-credit minors), and with internship and/or study abroad experiences, they are well positioned to get these very prestigious awards. Junior Paterno Fellows should start thinking about these things now, and it’s not too early for sophomores to get this on their radar as well.

So that you can learn more about how to take advantage of those opportunities, we’ve scheduled two things:

  1. On October 20, Ruth Mendum of the University Fellowships Office will make a presentation to interested Fellows at 4:30 pm in 124 Sparks. She’ll outline the possibilities, discuss the details, and in general set you up (if you are interested) for the application process. It’ll be over in less than an hour.
  2. Then students who are interested in making applications can count on one-on-one assistance (however much of it you would like) from Dr. Heather Murray, who has lots of experience in this area.

Please come on October 20.  There’s no obligation to apply for anything afterward–just an opportunity for you to see if this is right for you. Why not come and learn what your hard work has prepared you to enjoy?
