7 Tips for the Start of the School Year

We hope you had a great summer and that you’re looking forward to a great fall semester. While it’s hard to imagine kicking off an internship or full-time job search as you’re just getting settled into your classes for the semester, well…you need to get working on those searches as soon as possible.  

With that in mind, here’s an easy checklist of 7 things to do as soon as possible:

  1. Create or log into your Network Symplicity account and update your profile, especially class standing, expected graduation, major(s) and GPA.  If your profile is not current, then you may show up as ineligible to apply for some opportunities.
  2. Check out the Fall Career Days list of employers and start researching those you want to visit with during the event.
  3. Update your resume with any summer internship, volunteer, or global experiences and upload it to your Network Symplicity account for review.
  4. Update your internship information in Network Symplicity.  Had an internship this summer and didn’t report it yet?  You can still log in and add it to your profile at any time.
  5. Get a handle on the strengths you can offer potential employers by taking the StrengthsFinder® on-line assessment.
  6. View our calendar of events in Network Symplicity to make sure you don’t miss out on anything for the semester! Events already quickly approaching include: Liberal Arts Undergraduate Festival, Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree, Fall Career Days, Education Abroad Fair, & more!
  7. Follow the Career Enrichment Network on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to keep up with the latest events, opportunities, and internship postings.

Funding Opportunities for Internships, Study Abroad, & more

College of the Liberal Arts Enrichment Funding

Are you a Liberal Arts major participating in an internship, study abroad, or research experience this fall semester? Looking for funds to support your enrichment experience?

Apply for Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds!

Did you know that 97% of applicants received enrichment funds last year? Don’t hesitate to submit your application!

Full consideration given to applications received by September 1, 2017. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so apply ASAP! Applications will be considered after this priority deadline on a funds-available basis. Visit the College of the Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds website for general guidelines, application instructions and requirements, and the link to the online application system. Liberal Arts applicants should also make sure to read the list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on our website.

The Student Engagement Network Grant Program

The Student Engagement Network Grant Program is now accepting applications for Fall 2017!

The SEN will be awarding grants of up to $3,000 to support student engagement experiences. Examples include financial support for unpaid internships or research opportunities, living expenses, travel costs, and conference fees. Grant funding can also be used to compensate a student working fewer hours in order to be involved in a student club or organization on campus.

Looking for work or internship opportunities on campus this semester? Make sure to register for Network Symplicity to search for internship and other opportunities. Liberal Arts students are also encouraged to check the Penn State Jobs website for other work opportunities available on campus.

Here is a list of some current opportunities:

  • Teaching Assistants (TAs) for Sociology 5 course: Interested in helping to teach a Sociology course at Penn State? Applications sought from undergraduate students interested in working as teaching assistants for SOC 5 (Social Problems) class in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. Application details here.
  • Network Assistant with Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network: The Career Enrichment Network is a dynamic office housed within the college of the Liberal Arts. We work with Liberal Arts undergraduate students on a variety of enrichment experiences, including internships, study abroad, research, career assessment programs, resume and cover letter reviews, etc. We are looking for a fall 2017 intern with afternoon availability to assist with a variety of projects.   • Web Design Assistant with Penn State Rock Ethics Institute: The Rock Ethics Institute is seeking an efficient, detail-oriented, self-motivated web design assistant to assist with the redesign of the institute website. Typical duties include organizing files for transferring content and communicating with the web design team. Qualified candidates must possess knowledge of web design and digital media, be a good communicator, & more. Application details here.
  • Undergraduate Intern, Penn State University Libraries: The University Libraries in collaboration with World Campus seeks one intern to assist with World Campus library programs and initiatives. Namely, the student will help with development of online learning objects, video captioning, user experience, peer evaluation and maintenance of a Sites page. This student will work in close relationship with the Online Learning Librarian and an instructional designer. Application details here and in Network Symplicity.
  • Lion Line Telephone Representatives with Penn State Office of Annual Giving: Lion Line telephone representatives are part of the division of Development and Alumni Relations at Penn State. Telephone representatives call alumni to promote academics, scholarships, student affairs, and overall university advancement. Application details in Network Symplicity.
  • Coordinator Intern with Penn State Sustainability Institute: The Sustainability Institute is currently hiring to further the Institutes outreach and engagement strategy. A successful candidate must have a basic understanding of current sustainability issues and concepts, exceptional written and in-person communication skills and experience with campus entities such as UPUA, UPAC, and ASA. Studying Abroad this Summer, Fall, or Academic Year?

The Education Abroad is hosting in-person pre-departure workshops for students who are studying abroad this coming Summer 2017, Fall 2017, or Academic Year 2017-2018.

Travel Logistics Workshop– Thursday, April 6th @ 6pm in Sackett Building (see classroom list below)

  • Meet with study abroad alumni from your region! You will have the opportunity to hear about the experiences of Peer Advisers and Global Ambassadors and to ask them questions. This is a very informal workshop that will work more like a discussion group. This is your chance to get the inside scoop on your program, picture yourself as a local, and learn more about the culture of your destination-city. The regions will each have a classroom in which you can break off into groups with other students attending your program. The following rooms are located in Sackett Building– go to these rooms at 6pm.

  • If you do not see your country above and are unsure of your room, do not worry- this is just a short-list and you will have a room the night of the workshop. 

Internship Workshop– Monday, April 17th @ 6pm (Room TBD- will be announced shortly)  

  • Are you participating in an internship while abroad? If you are, attending this workshop will set you up for a successful semester working for a foreign company. Learn how to integrate into your host-city’s work atmosphere navigate an exciting environment. In addition, get insight on how to market this experience upon returning from studying abroad. This workshop will be led by Christine Mosich, a representative from Penn State’s Career Services center.

Bridging the Cultural Divide– Tuesday, April 18th @ 5pm in 165 Willard

  • Come learn the basics of cultural differences that will help prepare you to have more successful and meaningful experiences overseas! During this workshop, we will look at the differences between individualistic and collectivistic cultures, and discuss tips on how to more successfully communicate across cultures. Cultural awareness is vital to a successful cultural immersion, so come learn about some of the cultural situations you may encounter while overseas and learn how to navigate your new environment.

Industry Spotlight: Journalism

Are you interested the news? Do you have excellent written and verbal skills? If so, an internship in journalism could be a rewarding and fascinating experience. Applicants to positions don’t always have majors in journalism, and often come from majors within the Liberal Arts. Based on the internship you apply to, you could also have the opportunity to write about subjects and issues you are passionate about.

Students participating in summer internships are encouraged to apply for enrichment funding, but be sure you get your applications in on time. The summer priority deadline is May 1st and the FINAL summer deadline is June 1st. Students can find out more about enrichment funds and apply through the Career Enrichment Network website.

Summer Internship- National Journalism Center
The National Journalism Center seeks ambitious journalists and dedicated conservatives for its internship program. NJC provides an opportunity for students and recent graduates to get involved in combating liberal media bias through its press internships. Internships are full-time positions, and in addition to on-the-job experience, interns participate in weekly seminars with prominent journalists and receive training from our experienced academic director.

Journalism Internship- The Roasted Beat
The Roasted Beat is a new eclectic magazine in Avalon and Stone Harbor NJ. The Roasted Beat is looking for 1-2 students who would like to gain experience in reporting, writing, photography, ad sales, layout with In-Design and social media posting. The staff currently consists of volunteers and has published three issues throughout the summer of 2016. Six issues are planned for the summer of 2017. An intern could gain excellent experience in every aspect of publishing a magazine as we grow.

Sports Writer- isportsweb.com

As a sports writer with isportsweb.com you will be assigned to cover a sports beat for a team that you have equal parts passion, knowledge, and the ability to write with confidence about. As that team’s sports writer, students will be expected to generate two articles per week about the team(s) they are covering. These articles range from opinion and analysis articles to true game previews and recaps. We give our writers freedom to pick topics they find relevant to their particular team, but also guide them along the way to make sure they are on the right path.

Writing for isportsweb.com will expose you to a national audience of readers as well as educate you on the nuances of online sports reporting, which is all too critical in this day and age. You will receive editing and technical support during your time with isportsweb.com.

Assistant to Founder Virtual Internship- New York Minute Magazine

New York Minute Magazine is a rapidly growing online startup, with a virtual office. New York Minute Magazine is devoted to empowering women and redefining what it means to be successful. As a Founder’s Assistant Intern, you will be responsible for taking on any project or responsibility that she assigns. This could range from training a new intern to leading a project. This internship will provide you with a well-rounded understanding of how a start up business runs. You will be a part of every department and overseeing other interns on behalf of our Founder.

  • Priority Deadline: May 1, 2017. Full consideration will be given to applications received by the priority deadline. Applications received after will be considered on a funds-available basis.
  • Final Deadline: June 1, 2017. We will NOT be able to accept summer applications after the June 1 final deadline this semester because of the switch to Lion Path.

Chapel Executive Internship Program Provides $5,000 to Interns

The Chapel Executive Internship Program supports Liberal Arts students participating in premium internships, particularly in the private sector. This generous endowment makes it possible to provide roughly 20 students each year with $5,000 in enrichment funding.

Over the past few years, Liberal Arts students from different degree programs, participating in a wide variety of internships in the business/private sector have benefited from the Virginia Todd Chapel Executive Internship Program.

Vanguard Liberal Arts EXPLORE Day: April 19

This is a one day externship opportunity geared exclusively towards students pursuing a degree within Liberal Arts.

Liberal Arts students may not fully understand how their education can set them up for success at a large financial institution like Vanguard. Our goal is to speak about the importance of a liberal arts education and inform students on how they can utilize their experiences and education for a successful career in the industry. Throughout this day, students will be able to network with various Vanguard crew members with liberal arts backgrounds, hear about the various opportunities they have within Vanguard, and fully understand how our culture is so unique from other large financial companies.
