Spring 2018 Pre-Law Advising Sessions

Interested in law school and want to learn more?  Pre-Law Advising offers two different sessions, a Pre-Law Orientation Session and an Applying to Law School Session. Please read the descriptions and prerequisites of the two sessions carefully to determine which session is most appropriate for you.

Pre-Law Orientation Session (for 1st and 2nd year students):  First- and second-year students must attend a Pre-Law Orientation Session prior to scheduling an individual appointment with the Pre-Law Adviser or attending the Applying to Law School Session (see below).

Topics covered in the Pre-Law Orientation Session include:

  • Preparing for law school and strengthening your application now (even if you are not yet certain that you want to attend)
  • Skills required for law school
  • Learning about law school
  • Learning about the practice of law
  • Deciding whether to apply to law school
  • Pre-Law Advising resources

Spring 2018 Pre-Law Orientation Session dates:

Thursday, January 18: 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Monday, January 29: 10:00–11:00 a.m.
Tuesday, February 20: 2:00–3:00 p.m.
Wednesday, March 22: 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Wednesday, April 4: 9:00–10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, April 17: 11:00–12:00 p.m.

Applying to Law School Session (for juniors and seniors):  This session is designed for juniors and seniors who are getting ready to apply to law school.   First- and second-year students who have attended a Pre-Law Orientation Session are also invited to attend but it may make sense to wait until junior year to attend this session so that the information is fresh in your mind when you are ready to apply.

  • Introduction to the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
  • Strategies and options for LSAT preparation
  • Review of law school application timeline
  • Using lsac.org to apply to law school
  • Drafting personal statements/diversity statements/résumés/addenda
  • Obtaining strong letters of recommendation
  • Selecting/Evaluating law schools (brief intro to this topic)
  • Financing law school (brief intro to this topic)
  • Pre-Law Advising resources

Candidates should also demonstrate a willingness and ability to perform tasks in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Join the Schreyer Honors College and College of the Liberal Arts for a day trip to NYC to learn more about how business and government interact in the world’s financial capital. If you are interested in working in finance, economics, political science, law, or math, this is a great opportunity to learn from and network with those within the banking and regulatory industries.

Bloomberg, a global business and financial information and news leader, will be our host for the day. In addition to learning more about Bloomberg and their opportunities, participants will have the chance to meet and network with Penn State alumni working in a range of organizations in NYC, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Seward & Kissel LLP, and Cushman & Wakefield.

Transportation and lunch will be provided; professional dress* is required. This is an all-day event with an early departure (~6:00 AM) and a late return (~9:00 PM). Please check your schedule to ensure you can miss any Friday classes and/or other activities before you sign up to attend.

Once you have confirmed your availability, please complete and submit your registration form by Monday, October 17.

Space is limited; please note preference will be given to juniors and seniors. You will be contacted by Wednesday, October 19, to confirm your attendance on the trek.

The Business Development Analyst (“BD Analyst”) position constitutes an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Business Development department of a complex civil and criminal financial litigation law firm. General duties include, among others, conducting legal and factual research for potential new matters, performing competitive intelligence research, developing knowledge regarding potential clients, preparing attorneys for client meetings, conducting client and market research and analysis, assisting with the preparation of RFPs and pitch materials, preparing the firm’s submissions to legal rankings, planning and attending quarterly product group meetings, monitoring new sources for applicable articles related to the firm, current clients, and referral sources, and overall support for the Business Development department.

Job Qualifications
Candidates should possess a four-year college degree, a strong GPA, and excellent writing, research, teamwork, and communication skills. Successful BD Analysts have the ability to work independently, prioritize successfully under tight deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously. Argumentative research papers written for college courses or journalistic articles written for a publication are preferred; however, anything else that best reflects your writing skills, analytical abilities, and critical reasoning is also acceptable. Learn about the career opportunities available to graduates of our schools and the importance of a legal education.

Law Admissions Workshop Series (L.A.W.S.) are held in several places across the country including Chicago, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley and Atlanta. Hosted by a group of leading law schools, this series is designed to provide prospective applicants with information about law school and the legal profession. Admissions Deans from participating leading law schools will be present at these events.

Many of these schools do not recruit at other law school fairs so don’t miss this opportunity if you are interested in learning more about these schools.
