Applications Open for Penn State Explore Law Program

The application for the 2016 Penn State Law Explore Law program is now open.

The weeklong residency program, held from May 16 through 20 and open to all Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Penn State World Campus students, will provide participants with an introduction to the study of law and the law school learning environment. The program includes LSAT preparation instruction as well as courses taught by Penn State Law faculty, judges, and practicing attorneys. All tuition costs of the program, including housing and meals, will be paid by Penn State Law.

Our priority deadline will be January 4 with a standard deadline of March 14.  All applicants are asked to apply via the Explore Law Website.

One of the goals of Explore Law is to introduce the study of law to students from groups that are underrepresented in law school classrooms and the legal profession who may need support to facilitate their interest in the study of law.

We hope that you will refer students who are thinking about a career in law to apply to the program. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at ExploreLaw@psu.edu.

Announcing Registration for Fall 2015 Pre-Law Information Sessions

Penn State Pre-Law Advising offers two different information sessions, a Pre-Law Orientation Session and an Applying to Law School Session. The sessions are both facilitated by the Pre-Law Adviser and each session is limited to ten students.  Please read the descriptions and prerequisites of the two sessions carefully to determine which session is best for you.

Pre-Law Orientation Session:  Sessions are open to all students considering law school. First- and second-year students must attend a Pre-Law Orientation Session prior to scheduling an individual appointment with the Pre-Law Adviser or attending the Applying to Law School Session (see below). Juniors and seniors are also encouraged to attend, particularly those students who have recently decided to explore the possibility of law school.

Topics covered in the Pre-Law Orientation Session include:

  • Preparing for law school and strengthening your application now (even if you are not yet certain that you want to attend)
  • Skills required for law school
  • Learning about law school
  • Learning about the practice of law
  • Deciding whether to apply to law school

Applicants Sought for Student Legal Services Advisory Board

Help shape the programs and services at Student Legal Services (SLS) while building your resume!

Student applications are sought for the SLS Advisory Board for the 2015-2016 academic year. The SLS office provides legal counsel, advice, representation, and referral services to Penn State University students at the University Park campus.

Terms of the student appointments to the board run from September 2015 through May 2016. The board will meet once in the fall semester and once in the spring. Applicants should forward a resume and cover letter describing interest in serving on the board to: Kelly Mroz, Director, 222 Boucke Building or via email to mroz@psu.edu.

Penn State Student Legal Services Advisory Board – Student Members:

The Student Legal Services (SLS) Advisory Board provides general guidance and support for SLS programs. The board offers input regarding the office’s strategic direction and informs preventative education efforts. Board members provide connections between the office, the student body and the surrounding community.

Goals:

  • To help shape the strategic direction of SLS;
  • To provide insight into students’ needs and perceptions of the office;
  • To share the mission of SLS and encourage support of the program within the student body and community.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Attend two board meetings per year, one Fall semester, one Spring semester;
  • Provide insights into student needs to help develop and refine the strategic direction of the office;
  • Represent the advisory board at outreach events, as needed;
  • Assist the office in interviewing for attorney and staff vacancies, as needed;
  • Help recruit future advisory board members;
  • Participate in SLS assessment efforts; and
  • Serve a one-year renewable term.

Duties:

As a Paralegal Specialist some of your duties may include the following:

  • Review investigative reports, testimonies, interviews, files, and documents for a variety of civil and/or criminal cases.
  • Prepare narrative summaries, charts, tables, graphs, and other visual aide to be used during trial.
  • Utilize a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case- or program- specific legal matters.
  • Participate in the interviewing of potential witnesses, summarizing their prospective testimony, and suggest questions during examinations.
  • Serve as an liaison with client agencies to keep them informed about the litigation, and to seek their assistance to resolve particular legal or factual problems.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the Paralegal Specialist  position you must meet the requirements as defined.

A. You have a bachelor’s degree and meet superior academic achievement based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

— Class standing – Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

— Grade-point average (G.P.A.) Applicants must have a grade-point average of:3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B+” or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.  – OR-

B. You have one full year of graduate level study, or possess a Master’s or higher degree, e.g., LL.B, J.D., LL.M., Ph.D., in law or a legal field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. Note, one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.  – OR-

C. You have at least one year of work experience that involved preparing or reviewing contracts or other legal instruments for legal adequacy and conformance with applicable laws. – OR-

D. You have less than the full amount of graduate education described in “B” and less than the amount of experience described in “C”, but have a combination of the type of graduate education described in “B” and the kind of experience described in “C” that when combined the total percentages equal at least 100 percent.
