If you would like to learn more about these unique internship opportunities, join Caroline Briselli on Tuesday, September 27 in 124 Sparks for an information session. Caroline will discuss the internship program, the application process and the benefits of interning with the State Department, as well as speak about her own experience as a political-economic intern at the U.S. Embassy in Barbados. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the logistics of applying to the internship via the USA Jobs site.
Caroline Briselli is a senior majoring in History with minors in Middle East Studies and Business and the Liberal Arts. Caroline interned with the U.S. Department of State at U.S. Embassy Bridgetown in Barbados during summer 2015 and worked as a virtual intern in 2015 and 2016 to promote State Department opportunities to Penn State students.

Fall Career Days is this week, September 13-15, 2016!
Fall Career Days is a week of career fairs combined with some on-campus interviewing, information sessions, and workshops held by employers who are recruiting students on campus.
The majority of the employers at Fall Career Days represent corporate America. If you are interested in working for a large corporation, the fair may be a fit for you. Nonprofit and government agencies typically do not attend the Fall Career Days fairs, although there are some exceptions.
For the majority of Liberal Arts students, the relevant fair days are as follows:
Make sure to research the employers attending and make a top 5 or 10 list of those with whom you would like to speak. Here are a few companies for Liberal Arts students to check out at the career fair.

Interested in Federal Employment? Check out these workshops hosted by Partnership for Public Service on September 22 in 103 Bank of America Career Services Building .
Emily is a Penn State Liberal Arts alumna who earned degrees in Economics and International Politics. She gained internship experience with USAID and New Leaf Initiative, before joining the Partnership for Public Service, where she has served in various positions including Development Fellow, Program Associate, and Associate Manager, before taking on her current role as a Program Manager. In her role, she develops custom engagements and offerings to help federal agencies recruit and hire the talent needed to fulfill their missions, with a focus on internships and entry-level talent.
Federal Government Hiring Overview

Not sure if the federal government is for you? This session will discuss the benefits and opportunities of federal employment as well as provide some insights into such aspects like what the General Schedule (GS) is and how to navigate the security clearance process. Emily McConnell, a member of the Partnership for Public Service’s Education and Outreach Team, will share information on the state of the federal workforce and hiring trends, and you will also hear about differing programs to consider in your job search.
How to Create a Master Federal Resume

While you may find yourself summarizing your work history into a one-page document for a typical job application, your federal resume should be more detailed and run two-to-five pages in length for an entry-level job. How do you know about all of the nuances to consider while crafting your federal resume? Emily McConnell, a member of the Partnership for Public Service’s Education and Outreach Team, will walk you through the various components as well as tips and tricks to help you succeed in landing your dream internship or job.
How to Navigate USAJOBS

Creating a stellar resume is only half the battle when it comes to applying for a federal job, and understanding USAJOBS, the federal government’s primary portal for posting open jobs as well as accepting applications, is a critical step in finding that dream opportunity. Emily McConnell, a member of the Partnership for Public Service’s Education and Outreach Team, will teach you how to utilize the website, review and understand job postings, and navigate the federal application process.

There are lots of things you can do to make sure you are prepared for Fall Career Days. Here are our top 8 tips to get you started:
#8 Attend a Prep Workshop. Career Services and recruiters host workshops the week before the fair to help you prep for the fair. Attend sessions like Marketing Your Liberal Arts Degree (9/6), Resume Tips for Non-Technical Majors (9/6), & more to make sure you are prepared for the fair.
#7 Research the employers attending and make a top 5-10 list of those with whom you would like to meet. #5 Check for additional networking events. Many employers will be hosting on-campus events in addition to the career fair. Check the Network Symplicity and Nittany Lion Career Network calendars for details. Amica, Cigna, Altria, & Bates White are just a few employers who will hosting additional networking opportunities on campus.
#4 Practice your 30 second introduction. Speaking with recruiters at the career fair can be nerve-wracking, but preparing ahead of time can help! Remember to highlight your relevant skills and experiences, put your major in context, and express your interest in the organization! Here are some other helpful tips about approaching employers from a recruiter’s perspective.
#3 Have your resume ready to go. Take advantage of our walk-in resume review hours on September 8, 9, & 12. Make sure your resume highlights the skills and experiences most relevant to the companies you plan on speaking with. Be prepared to hand your resume to a recruiter, but also to apply online after the event!
