Eve Ensler at Penn State

This year I had the opportunity to organize Sexual Violence Awareness Week here at University Park. This week is an annual effort to raise awareness of the issue of sexual violence and misconduct and educate students on how we can all work together to prevent sexual violence. I was able to bring in Eve Ensler as our keynote speaker, which was extremely exciting because of the role she plays in advocating against violence against women across the globe. Eve created the play The Vagina Monologues which is a part of V-Day, an effort to stop violence against women, and also started One Billion Rising which is the largest mass action to end violence against women in human history.

Meeting Eve was a truly amazing experience. She broadened my understanding of the issue of sexual violence beyond our campus, and even our nation, to other countries where the situation is even worse. There are some countries that do not have laws against female genital mutilation or where women that get raped are still seen as the ones to be punished for that crime. The statistics tell us that 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted during their college career, while 1 in 3 women globally will be victims of sexual violence during their lifetime. Speaking with Eve about these issues, and hearing her lecture at our keynote event, gave me a more globalized view of an issue that I am already so passionate about.

Additionally, I was able to bring this perspective to hundreds of other students through Eve’s keynote speech, and the discussion she hosted for Paterno Fellows after. This experience allowed me to serve my fellow students and hopefully further educate them on the huge impact that sexual violence has on the global population. Meeting Eve and hearing her speak reaffirmed my aspirations to continue raising awareness of sexual violence and helping victims of these crimes. She inspired me to dream big and imagine a world where sexual violence is ended and women can live without fear. I hope to work for an organization that makes efforts to end sexual violence and further women’s rights after I graduate in May.

Student Spotlight: Alice Greider, Rabat, Morocco

I studied in Rabat, Morocco with the IES: Francophone Studies program during the summer of 2015. I wanted to improve my French more than anything, but did not want to study in France. Morocco offered me much more on a cultural scale than France could have done. I got to experience Ramadan, living in an Islamic culture in general, learn a bit of Arabic, experience an entirely new geography, and witness a scale of poverty among Morocco’s poor that was truly shocking. I chose Morocco over France because I wanted to pick a country where the experience of studying and living there would be entirely different from the experience a tourist would get visiting on vacation. The aim is not to be a tourist the entire semester, but to live like a local as much as possible and really integrate into society and learn what ordinary life is like there. I went to Morocco to better my French, when people asked me why, I answered, “Because it’s not France.” Morocco would challenge me more and studying and living there would open me up to more than I would get by just visiting as a tourist.

I chose to study during the summer of 2015, mostly because I have another study abroad trip lined up for spring 2016 so this was the only free time I had. I worked jobs back home for my first summer and thought the whole time about how I wanted to improve my French through immersion in a foreign country during the next summer. However, I would encourage people to study abroad earlier in their college career because your junior and senior year are vital times for leadership positions, research opportunities, thesis work, and to take those classes you’ve only just discovered. Studying abroad earlier also leaves you more room if you discover you want to use your experience to shape your academic or professional career more.

We got to do some volunteering in Rabat that I really enjoyed. First we took plastic bags down to the beach to pick up trash. It was so nice to get calls from males that weren’t cat-calls, but calls of thanks. Multiple people came up to us and thanked us directly, and one bloke even asked if he could help as well. A few people out rightly asked why we were doing this, confused as to why American students would be cleaning up a tiny beach in Morocco. My favorite though was the entire class of schoolboys who swarmed around us and each picked up a few bits of trash to put in our bag on their way leaving the beach.

IMGP1075Then a few days later we went to the Moroccans equivalent of a soup kitchen that makes and serves an iftar (the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast) for those who are homeless or who cannot afford a large iftar. We helped prepare food and set the tables for 144 people. Each table had to be set with dishes, glasses, milk, yogurt, orange juice, a hunk of bread, and napkins, and then we prepared all the plates (with a wedge of cheese, egg, dates, shebeka, those bread cake things, and meat pitas) and bowls of harira soup and set them at each spot in time for everyone to come rushing in. We helped everyone cram into a seat, made sure everyone was taking their fair share, and then went around with tea and coffee at the end. Everyone was very appreciative and thanked up in a variety of languages. However I think that this association has lots of groups come and volunteer for them so the recipients were more used to foreigners helping here. I was in my element because it was essentially a more chaotic and less structured version of the restaurants I work in at home, so it was a brief gap of familiarity for me.

IMGP1583IMGP1338I really enjoyed the fact that we had the opportunity to give back to Rabat a little. People appreciate benevolence anywhere you are, and it was refreshing to be the ones giving; when you’re away from home in a strange place the hospitality of where you’re staying gives so much to you. And it just reminded me that there is need everywhere in the world. While volun-tourism isn’t exactly the most helpful thing for a place sometimes, there is never a time when you shouldn’t be looking to help people. However, it was mostly just nice to be showing people a good and giving image of Americans. I study diplomacy, but I’m convinced that no matter what relations are like between governments and heads of state, the real international relations is between the everyday citizens.

I study international politics primarily and want to work for the UN, the EU, or an international organization, so French, and hopefully one day Arabic, will be vital for me in my career, hence my determination to improve it in the first place. I also will benefit from my broader perspective into a Muslim country and the workings of North African politics, history, and the particular place they are in regarding the European Refugee and Migrant Crisis. I received Enrichment Funding which I used to help pay for my flight.

My French improved by leaps and bounds, particularly on the more practical side of explaining future plans, describing events, and expressing emotions and needs. My other classes, taught in French, also helped quite a bit. My Politics of North Africa class gave me insight into the unique history and colonial experience of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and I’m using concepts I learned in my Sociology of Migration class in my thesis research already.

Program Spotlight: Vienna, Austria

Liberal Arts student, Nataliya Gagarkina, spent her summer in Austria. Nataliya took part in a faculty led program that traveled to Vienna. Vienna, Austria: Intercultural Communication, is a four week program that includes two courses, Intercultural Communications and Communication in the European Union. Students must be at least rising Sophomores and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

I chose this particular program after Ines Meyer-Hoess came in to my Calculus class to talk about the program. In all honesty, I hadn’t considered studying abroad, but then Ines made it sound so exciting that I came out of that class already looking up potential study abroad programs, it was just a matter of time before I decided on Vienna.

Being a double major and a Paterno fellow, I had to use the program to fulfill certain requirements and the two CAS classes were a perfect way to fulfill some of my general education requirements.

Penn State students were able to meet with a 103 year old Holocaust survivor in Salzburg, Austria

Not to say that other programs could not have done the same, but Vienna was just so different. So many of my friends have studied abroad in Paris, Florence, or Barcelona. Vienna seemed more unique in a way. The program also seemed to be more ‘personal’ than so many others. Our group came down to only six students, Veronica- our wonderful TA, and Ines of course. Being so small, we really got to know and care for one another.

Studying in Vienna, I had the opportunity I could not have had being in Paris or Florence. With a focus on intercultural communications, our curriculum also covered the Holocaust. We even got to meet a 103-year-old Holocaust survivor! We have all studied about the Holocaust, but studying about the persecution of people and then being able to visit their homes, schools, and places of worship, make it an entirely different experience. An experience no one could ever forget.

I chose the summer semester after my sophomore year to go abroad. I planned to study abroad at one point, and the timing of the summer semester just seemed perfect. I did not want to study during the year, partly because of the strict coursework requirements that could not have been completed off campus, and partly because I knew I couldn’t handle being gone for a full semester. I did not like the idea of being away for half an academic year and then having to start all over. So I was looking for a shorter commitment, and “Vienna in Action” fit the bill!

While in Austria, we really got to know some of the Austrian students there. One part of our final project was to conduct a field research which included interviews and other research. For my project, I interviewed 5 different Austrians and got to know them on a personal level.

This allowed me to better understand the differences between our cultures and even become good friends!  As I have mentioned previously, I am a double major in economics and psychology. I am hoping to study law after graduation, and the study abroad has prepared me to see the differences of people with different backgrounds. It has taught me to recognize that we do not all see things the same way, and that if you want someone to agree with you, you first have to make them understand why you are thinking what you are thinking. The College of the Liberal Arts was there every step of the way leading up to the study abroad. The preparation for the trip was as simple as it could have been.

And now that we are back at Penn State, I know that Ines is there for us as both a mentor and a friend.

The experience has impacted my life in ways I could not even begin to describe. Well for one, anyone who studies abroad will agree that being in a new country, not understanding the language, and being forced to learn your way around is exciting but at the same time frightening. Personally, I love experiencing new things. And I am all up for adventure. But there are times, like when you find yourself in a new country that these things are being put to a test. After all, you are out of your comfort zone, and you are expected to find your way back.

In short, the process of learning to adjust is also the process of learning responsibility, which then leaves you with a sense of maturity.

In terms of academics, I was able to take Communications Arts and Science classes for the first time ever. We had the opportunity to visit broadcasting stations, publishing houses, and the EU offices among other places. What we were taught in classes, we were then able to apply during our field trips, and actually ask the people involved questions about their jobs.

Our Austrian professor, Thomas Bauer, is a renowned scholar and an important member of the organizations in charge of Austrian Media. His style of teaching was different from what I was used tohere at Penn State. Instead of focusing on specific facts, he instead tried to make us see the different ways of thinking. Instead of asking Professor Bauer questions, we were the ones that had to explain why we
were thinking the way we were. This ‘new’ kind of way to perceive information was probably the most valuable thing I brought back from Austria. It is the skill that I now apply to my classes and even my day-to-day life.

My favorite experience was probably meeting with the Holocaust survivor. Hearing what he had to say really made me realize the effect of the Holocaust on people’s lives. He was separated from his family and friends, and had to witness the death of his loved ones. He was then asked to stand up and rebuild the Jewish community in Salzburg. Hearing his testimony really made the Holocaust ‘real’ for me.

As You Like It at the American Shakespeare Center

Students in English 197H took a trip to Staunton, Virginia to the American Shakespeare Center. There they saw a production of the play “As You Like It”. Here is one student’s account of the trip and the production.

A basic and widely understood requirement that must be met before attending a performance of a Shakespearean play is to understand what type of play is about to be performed. Someone who sits down in a theater expecting to see a comedy is likely to be disappointed upon witnessing the tragic cascade of dishonesty and murder that marks Shakespeare’s Othello. It’s important to recognize the literary template upon which a play performance is based in order to gain a fuller theatrical experience of that particular play (though as our viewing of Othello proved, some adaptations of the tragedies can have their funny moments).

When I sat down at the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) in Staunton, Virginia, to watch As You Like It, I already knew the story was a comedy. There were even times in my reading of the play when I unexpectedly laughed out loud, a reaction that admittedly few pieces of writing are able to induce—especially works from the 1600s that are written in Old English. However, one of the great aspects of the performance of As You Like It was how much funnier those already humorous scenes became when they were delivered by the ASC performers.

There are two reasons why I think the play was rendered so much more amusingly during the live performance. The first has to do with the relationships between not so much the characters, but the actors and actresses themselves. I sensed a real chemistry between the members of the cast that seemed to lend itself to a more enjoyable viewing experience. This goes beyond the simple matter of finding a good character fit for a part; I noticed the cast members smiling or laughing at the manner of delivery of another actor or actress in a way that seemed slightly out of character for the former. Their “out of character” behavior provided an atmosphere of playfulness and even informality that allowed the audience to feel comfortable and free to laugh. In comparison, many Shakespeare plays today—even comedies—maintain an undertone of tragedy or intense sophistication that unfortunately appears to have become standard for the famous playwright’s works. ASC’s version was refreshingly easygoing.

This is not to say, however, that the performance was unprofessional—which leads into my second point. The actors were clearly enormously gifted in the abilities and were so skilled that they could successfully engage the audience in order to enhance the quality of their performance, bringing real life to the jokes. In Act 1, Scene 2, Celia converses with her cousin about honesty and beauty. During the performance, the actress playing Celia approached a woman sitting on the stage and touched her chin, commenting “for those that she makes fair”—she removed her hand from the woman’s chin and hit her lightly on the leg—“she scarce makes honest.” The woman accepted the joke good-naturedly and the audience (as well as some of the cast) laughed. These kinds of interactions helped to break down the so-called fourth wall, directly engaging those who were watching the performance and by doing so, making the play that much more entertaining. Overall, the talent and passion with which these individuals did their jobs created a unique atmosphere found only at the ASC that heightened the most poignant qualities of As You Like It.

Visit the Pinwheels Garden!

If you don’t, you can watch a video or read stories about it.

This year, a few students in the Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority and Paterno Fellows Program teamed up to make the 2nd annual Pinwheels garden at Penn State. In fact, we are “planting” the garden today around 1pm! Come stop by the Pinwheels garden outside of Sparks Building near the Pattee Library.

LAUC Statement in Support of the Paterno Fellows Student Advisory Board

LAUC Image copy.jpgLooking back more than a year after tragedy befell our great University, we have seen many attempts to restore Penn State’s name after our University’s darkest hour.
   
One proposed action, in the spirit of the University’s convalescence, was to rename The Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program in the wake of the Freeh Report’s allegations against Joseph Vincent Paterno. As part of the discussions surrounding the program’s now-controversial name, the Paterno Fellows Student Advisory Board was consulted for a student view on the issue. While on the surface level this issue was black-and-white–rename the program and be consistent with such efforts as the NCAA’s stripping of Paterno’s record 409 wins, or keep the name just as the University Libraries did–the Student Advisory Board perceived many larger questions.
   
Ultimately, the students advised the administration of the College of the Liberal Arts to defer judgment on the program’s name, citing their belief in due process and the need for more information regarding Paterno’s role in the case against Gerald Sandusky.
   
The Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council, on behalf of the students of the College of the Liberal Arts, would like to commend the Student Advisory Board for their embodiment of many liberal arts virtues that make the students of the College great: holistic thinking, long-range planning, and judiciousness all played a huge role in the Student Advisory Board’s decision.
   
Although this statement is emerging well after-the-fact, given that the legal process has yet to take its full course, we perceive that the future holds further judgments of the Paterno Fellows Program’s name. It is for this reason that we would like to commend the Student Advisory Board for its ability to convey the strength of the College of the Liberal Arts in these difficult times and teach us all a powerful lesson about critical thinking. WE ARE in good hands.

What the Freeh Report Means for One Paterno Fellow

As a new of era of change begins for Penn State, the many complicated and unsatisfying details of the Freeh report have unfolded and shocked students, faculty, and alumni alike. We hear outbursts of disgust from the media and the public, often directed at the wrong people, to pinpoint blame on the university as a whole and thus also on the student body for crimes committed by others. We know we are not responsible for the actions of a select few, but it is often very hard to communicate such distinctions to a person who only finds updates via social media or breaking news reports. In the few conversations I have had with people about the trial verdict and recent dismissals, the name Paterno rolls off everyone’s tongue in a disappointing tone that renders it as though he committed the acts himself. It becomes obvious through the opinions of both Penn Staters and non-Penn Staters that the Paterno legacy today is different than it was just a short year ago. The connotations associated with his name are unsettling and undefined; some believe the name still stands for the value of hard work and ethical leadership while others believe that it stands for unchecked authority and moral failings. Places like Nike’s Joe Paterno Child Development Center and Paternoville have already taken action in removing the name from their titles as a result. The statue has been taken down, the NCAA has imposed heavy sanctions on the Penn State football program, yet the University Library continues to bear the Paterno name. However, these changes are not of particular interest to me. What I am concerned with is the Paterno Fellows Program.

As a senior entering my final semester at Penn State, my concern is, understandably, I hope, self-interested. My worries center around my own future, and I question myself if the incidents of the past nine months will impact my ability to obtain interviews and ultimately a full-time position after I graduate. Up until the past few weeks, I have had the title “Paterno Fellow” on my resume right under The Pennsylvania State University, B.A. English and French, Schreyer Honors College, three elements of my student character that I say with pride. I hadn’t realized until very recently that my association with the Paterno Fellows program could become something of an issue as I apply for full-time jobs this fall. Just the other day my mother texted me, “You should take Paterno Fellow off your [email] signature for a bit….Many will question it.” As disturbed as I was by this comment, I believe it was sound advice. For now.

In removing Paterno Fellows from my resume and email signature, I felt torn between two feelings – fear and pride. I feared what potential employers might think when they see the “Paterno Fellow” line on my resume, but I am enormously proud of what I’ve accomplished through the program. One such achievement includes the research position I held this summer for a non-profit organization in New Canaan, Connecticut, called Voices of September 11th. I applied by writing a simple email inquiry with my resume attached back in December of 2011, asking if any internship positions were available for summer 2012. There was no cover letter or writing sample attached with it. This inquiry led to a phone interview with my current boss, Frank, in which we briefly discussed my involvement within several organizations on campus and previous job experience. His final question involved Paterno Fellows. “I see you are a Paterno Fellow here. That looks impressive. Mind telling me what that’s all about?” Fifteen minutes later I was hired.

As Fellows, we know the quality of the program for which we have worked so hard throughout our college careers. For some students, myself included, gaining access to the Schreyer Honors College first became a real possibility because of the Paterno Fellows Program. In becoming a Scholar, I have set out to do exactly what the Paterno Fellows program encourages: to enrich my Penn State experience by integrating my classroom education with advanced external opportunities. My upper level honors courses in English and French have deepened my relationships with faculty in my departments. Studying abroad and declaring a second major – choices I made in order to become a Fellow – have influenced my education and character in ways I would never have imagined. I have received priority scheduling every semester since my acceptance so that I can register for classes that further my personal and professional goals. Even beyond the $4,500 I have received to date through the program to relieve out-of-pocket expenses for traveling and internships, my educational experience as a Fellow has made all the difference in my college career.

My apprehension about the title of the program is, again, fundamentally selfish. In any other context, most non-Penn Staters right now see the name Paterno and do not think of the values of discipline, hard work, ethical leadership and academic excellence for which the program was created. Will they do the same when I advertise to potential employers that I am a part of an academic program named after Joe Paterno?

I am also concerned about incoming classes and the freshmen and sophomores who are currently aspiring to be Fellows. Just the other day I had a friend question whether she should continue aspiring and whether or not it “was all worth it.” I hope that she continues to pursue the Paterno Fellows program, because regardless of the title, the program sets Liberal Arts students up for success. It motivates us to do more and to want to do more during our time here. It makes us realize that the power of education can be multifaceted, and that enrichment of all kinds is most certainly accessible right here on campus. I only hope that the rest of the world gives students in the Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program a chance to explain that rather than flipping to the next resume as soon as they read the name Paterno.

For now, “Paterno Fellow” stays off my resume. I have made this choice because the current situation is so uncertain. The turmoil is ever-changing, unfortunately. I cannot predict what will happen this semester or by the end of this year, and I do not believe that I need to make a personal sacrifice and risk missing an opportunity because an opinionated recruiter reads that name and dismisses my education and my association with Penn State. I have acknowledged that unfortunately, those people do exist, and I will do my best to educate them and defend the education I received at Penn State. I can defend the Fellows program created for Liberal Arts students, but as wonderful as the program is, I cannot defend its current name.

My Summer Legal Internship in NYC

This is actually my second summer interning at the firm. Last year, I was fortunate enough to receive a position in the Library & Research Department. While there, I conducted competitive intelligence research on other top firms in the NYC area. I then compiled the data into a firm-exclusive database that allowed individuals within the firm to quickly browse through the information. I was also able to help out with several research requests for some of the firm’s partners. However, the most valuable and exciting part of my summer occurred on the occasions that I was allowed to attend training sessions with the summer associates. Through these informational sessions, I was exposed to the daily routine and requirements of young legal professionals at the firm. I was also able to learn how to use several different legal research services, offered within the firm, that the summer associates were required to use. Overall, the most rewarding aspect of my summer was acquainting myself with life at a large firm. Though the workload is sometimes daunting, being able to intern at White & Case confirmed that I do, in fact, want to attend law school and eventually become an attorney.

This year, I am working in the Professional Development & Attorney Recruitment Department of the firm. Thus far, the experience has been greatly different than my time in the Library & Research department. While last summer I spent the majority of my time conducting research by myself, I am in constant contact and interaction with people this summer. I have mostly been working on compiling attorney reviews for the upcoming evaluation period. I have also been assigned to various other projects. The work is much more fast-paced, and I have been working under more stringent deadlines. Even so, I honestly can say that I enjoy going to work every morning. The people I work with are truly incredible. They are extremely driven and devote their full attention to advancing their careers. Despite this, everyone remains levelheaded and has been incredibly nice and polite to me even though I am clearly the “low man on the totem pole.”

Not only has the experience confirmed for me that I do want to work for a law firm, it has also established that I would love to practice in New York City. While I have always had a dream to practice law in the city, I never knew if I would actually enjoy living day to day in such an intense environment. I was pleasantly surprised and have come to love every minute spent in New York. 

None of my experiences at White & Case would have been possible without the Paterno Fellows Program. Without the funding graciously provided to the fellows, I would not have been able to afford spending two summers in New York. I completely recommend that anyone who is thinking about the program should seriously consider making the commitment to join. I have found the rewards to be immeasurable and would have missed out on so many great experiences had I not become a part of such an incredible organization.

Inaugural Class of Paterno Fellows Honored

The first graduating class of the Paterno Fellow Program was honored at a ceremony on May 5, 2012.  Sue Paterno and the dean of the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College were on hand to offer congratulations to nearly 80 graduates of the program.  

In this post, we share two different perspectives of the ceremony at Penn State Live and the Liberal Arts Alumni Connection.
