Urban Teacher Center (UTC) Seeking Applicants

Pioneering Teacher Preparation Program in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC

Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that operates in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC.  Every participant in the program completes an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary, middle or high school.  In addition to extensive classroom experience during the residency, UTC teachers earn a master’s degree with a dual focus of general education and special education that is directly relevant to the urban teacher.  They also receive three years of one-on-one coaching.  During the first year, participants receive a $20,000 stipend from UTC.  Teacher salaries in Baltimore and DC are some of the highest in the nation.  Both cities allow an effective teacher to earn six figures.

All UTC teachers are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance: only those who demonstrate effective teaching practice and improve student learning receive two certifications and complete the program.  UTC teachers are among the most expert and results-oriented in the nation.

A great education for all will create a great future for all. All kids deserve the chance to reach their full potential—but today, only eight percent of students growing up in poverty graduate from college by age 24, compared with 80 percent of students in more affluent areas. This limits life options, affects families and communities, and has significant social and economic implications for our country.

Teach For America is growing the force of leaders committed to ensuring that all kids have an education that expands their opportunities and gives them more choices in life. By teaching for at least two years in TFA’s corps, you will join thousands of leaders helping students in low-income communities make the academic progress that will expand their opportunities for the future. You’ll develop the leadership skills, insights, and commitment that will drive you to be a lifelong advocate for kids. And you’ll build relationships with fellow corps members and others in your community working to meet this challenge.

This year, 11,000 corps members are teaching in 50 regions across the country, while nearly 37,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the changes necessary to make a great education a reality for all.
