Throughout the academic year, we will be posting tips to help Liberal Arts students navigate Nittany Lion Careers. Posts will be included on your NIttany Lion Careers homepage and in the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Newswire. You can also download a copy of each tip in the Resource Library in your Nittany Lion Careers account.

On the home screen of your Nittany Lion Careers account, click on “Counseling & Calendar” and then “Counseling Appt.”

Click on the “Request New Appointment” button.

Fill out the appropriate filters to search for an appointment that works with your schedule. In the “Type” section, make sure to select “In-Person.” We do not offer virtual appointments at this point.

All the staff members from the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network will have “(Liberal Arts)” next to their names. If you hover over each person’s name, you can find out more information about the staff member and what topics she is available to discuss with you. Once you select the appropriate filters, click on the “Check Availability” button.

A list of possible dates and times will appear on the right. Select the date and time that works best with your schedule.

You can either refine your results to see different options or select an appointment from the list on the right that works for you. Next, confirm your appointment.

Make sure to select the appropriate appointment type so our staff knows what you hope to discuss. Then, submit your request.

Your appointment request will show up as a “Requested Appointment” initially. Once a staff member in our office confirms the appointment it will move to “Approved Appointments.”

You will receive email confirmations that your request has been received and then approved/rejected, along with a reminder about your appointment the day before.  If you need to reschedule, you can do so up to 24 hours before your appointment through your Nittany Lion Careers account.  If an emergency comes up within 24 hours, call or email the Career Enrichment Network.

Course Overview: English 478 Grant Writing

Over the course of the semester you will be introduced to the broad principles of the grant-writing profession in theory and practice; by the end of the semester, you will have completed a project proposal requesting funding for a cause that you care about.

At its essence, grant writing is the art of pragmatically matching visions, missions, objectives, and goals so that a project idea will receive the funding it requires to help a community in need. All the moving parts from over in the Grant Maker (GM) world have to be in synch with all the moving parts of your non-profit agency (NPA) and your proposed project from within that agency. Without a mission-match, there will be no grant awarded by your GM. That is why we will spend considerable time early on in the course exercising the subtle skill of close reading of culture. Mid-way, you will practice the more pragmatic art of building each element of a proposal. By the end of the semester, you will have written a completed grant application with narrative explanation of need, logical justification for solution, evaluation strategy for measuring outcomes, and a feasible budget.

• Comprehensive understanding of the grant-writing field in the non-profit world
• Strategic use of research skills to match need to proposed program and program to funding foundation
• Beginning mastery of all elements of the basic proposal, including: mission match, objectives that fill a proven need, evaluation strategies that reliably measure outcome, a feasible budget, and proof of capacity and sustainability
• Practice of skills most needed in the current economic and political climate, including innovation within an established organization, and collaboration with outside agencies
• Mastery of applied rhetorical style emphasizing clarity and precision

Major Papers

You have 4 building-block papers that will lead to a full-length grant proposal in your 5th assignment; then there is 1 short follow-up assignment for a total of 6 graded projects, each with hard deadlines spread throughout the semester. Your papers will be as follows:

• Papers 1-3: Building block outlines of researched, developed materials needed for grant proposals.
• Paper 4: A Letter of Intent that provides a concise, preliminary version of the grant application’s argument for funding.
• Paper 5: The full-length grant application proposal, with attachments.
• Paper 6: A brief memo about next steps and a cover letter for future employment.

Position Summary and Essential Functions
This position’s primary responsibilities are to assist Knowledge Sharing team
members in conducting quantitative and qualitative research on community
development financial institutions (CDFI). The position’s essential functions are
assisting with the following: implementing online surveys and cleaning survey data;
developing data cleaning processes; building and maintaining databases; producing
tables, charts, and figures for OFN publications; producing OFN Member Peer
Comparisons; responding to information requests from OFN staff, as well as external
parties; processing transaction-level data for GIS mapping; improving OFN’s data
visualization efforts; and researching topics requested by Knowledge Sharing team
members.

Position Responsibilities

• Implements online surveys, including OFN’s annual Member Survey; drafts
  communications with CDFIs.
• Oversees the Annual Member Survey process and continuously improves it efficiency, including but not limited to: programming the survey software, conducting the survey, providing assistance to respondents and extensive
  cleaning of survey data.
• Conducts survey data validation by reviewing Members’ audited financial statements and tracking survey responses; develops data validation processes.
• Interacts with OFN Members to ensure high quality survey responses and seeks input on survey designs and processes.
• Develops and maintains the historical annual Member survey database using MS Access; creates queries in response to internal and external data requests.
• Coordinates layouts for tables, charts, and figures used in publishable reports including the annual Side by Side publication, OFN Member Peer Comparisons, Inside the Membership, and Member Reviews.
• Collects and validates transaction-level data for OFN’s CDFI Coverage Map website (a web-based GIS platform); drafts communication to increase Coverage Map participation.
• Uses data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, GIS) to disseminate OFN’s research to internal and external audiences.
• Responds independently to information requests from OFN staff as well as external parties and participates on projects as a Knowledge Sharing representative.
• Researches topics requested by Knowledge Sharing team members.
• Writes blog posts and other materials related to OFN’s research.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree or 5-7 years of work experience in lieu of a degree; Master’s
  Degree a plus
• 3+ years experience in data analysis using Excel experience with Access or another database software are required
• 3+ years direct experience in quantitative research required; experience in qualitative research is highly beneficial
• Experience with statistical software is required (e.g., R, SPSS); experience with Wincross is a plus
• Experience with ArcGIS software is required
• Experience with online survey software such as Survey Monkey, Qualtrics and/or similar software a plus
• Experience with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau) is preferred
• Experience or volunteer work in nonprofit or small office environment a plus

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of financial statements is essential, understanding of nonprofit
  financial institutions’ financial statements is a plus.
