The Internship Experience Program (IEP) allows for non-temporary appointments that are expected to last the length of the academic program for which the intern is enrolled. IEP participants, while in the program, are eligible for noncompetitive promotions.

This program allows for noncompetitive conversion into the competitive service following successful completion of all program requirements. Veteran’s preference applies. So consider a Pathways internship with the U.S. Department of State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S. diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy initiatives.

Full-Time Posting: Special Assistant to Lt. Governor Mike Stack

Title: Special Assistant to Lt. Governor

Job Duties: This position has several major components:

  •  Travel with the LG.
  • Handle Advance Work for meetings, travel, and events the Lt. Governor attends outside of the Capitol.  Advance Work includes: arriving a half hour in advance of the LG at all meetings and events, talking to the POC for each event upon arrival, coordinating the logistics of where the LG needs to go when he arrives, who he should greet and speak to, making sure the event and meeting has all of the equipment that the LG needs including but not limited to: AV equipment, podium, photographer, etc.  Also responsible for greeting the LG at his car and walking him and the trooper into the event to greet the POC.
  • General Office Work – Answer phones, help constituents with issues involving executive agencies, write letters and emails to constituents.
  • Attend Events and Meetings for the LG
  • Help the LG’s Press Secretary post twitter and Facebook posts, photos, and other items to the Lt. Governor’s Social Media pages.
  • Communications work – Draft articles for enewsletters.Other duties as assigned by the Lt. Governor’s Chief of Staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Lt. Governor’s Chief of Staff.

You will be asked (in the vacancy questions section of this announcement) whether you wish to be considered for GAO’s Health Care team or if you’d prefer to rotate among various GAO mission teams throughout your first 2 years of employment with the agency. Duties:

As a Paralegal Specialist some of your duties may include the following:

  • Review investigative reports, testimonies, interviews, files, and documents for a variety of civil and/or criminal cases.
  • Prepare narrative summaries, charts, tables, graphs, and other visual aide to be used during trial.
  • Utilize a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case- or program- specific legal matters.
  • Participate in the interviewing of potential witnesses, summarizing their prospective testimony, and suggest questions during examinations.
  • Serve as an liaison with client agencies to keep them informed about the litigation, and to seek their assistance to resolve particular legal or factual problems.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the Paralegal Specialist  position you must meet the requirements as defined.

A. You have a bachelor’s degree and meet superior academic achievement based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

— Class standing – Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

— Grade-point average (G.P.A.) Applicants must have a grade-point average of:3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B+” or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.  – OR-

B. You have one full year of graduate level study, or possess a Master’s or higher degree, e.g., LL.B, J.D., LL.M., Ph.D., in law or a legal field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. Note, one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.  – OR-

C. You have at least one year of work experience that involved preparing or reviewing contracts or other legal instruments for legal adequacy and conformance with applicable laws. – OR-

D. You have less than the full amount of graduate education described in “B” and less than the amount of experience described in “C”, but have a combination of the type of graduate education described in “B” and the kind of experience described in “C” that when combined the total percentages equal at least 100 percent.

Join alumnus and Emergency Management Specialist Thane Fake as he shares lessons from his role as an emergency management specialist and gives advice to students interested in pursuing careers in the federal government.

Thane Fake received a B.S. in Public Service from Penn State in 1998. In 1993 and again in 1997, he worked with the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Currently he is an Emergency Management Specialist in the Justice Management Division’s Security and Emergency Planning Staff, Continuity Assurance Section for the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1996, he worked for the Democratic National Convention. From 1993 through 1999, he worked with Political Americana, a political resource firm. In May of 1999, he received a Presidential Appointment as Staff Assistant to Attorney General, Janet Reno. Thane has also been a Political Affairs Intern as well as a Presidential Correspondence Intern in the White House. He was a volunteer for the Clinton/Gore campaign in 1992 and again in 1996. While at Penn State he was President and Treasurer for the Penn State York Student Government Association as well as a council member for the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments. Thane served as a budget analyst for over 10 years in the Justice Management Division for the U.S. Department of Justice.
