City Year is an education focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to keep students in school and on track to graduation.
Application Deadline: April 30, 2014
At City Year, we believe education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. However, in high-poverty communities there are external factors and obstacles students are faced with every day that can interfere with their ability to both get to school and be ready and able to learn.
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you’ll spend your 11 months serving hands-on with your small group of students to change their educational outcomes and their futures as a whole.
City Year pays corps members in the form of a stipend, which varies by city based on cost of living, but it will be at least $12,100 per service year, plus health insurance benefits. Along with a living stipend, corps members will also get some other financial aid that can help them in their life after City Year, like a $5,645 Segal Education Award that can be used toward a graduate or undergraduate degree, or toward federal loans or future graduate school loans. You can also apply for loan forbearance on eligible loans while you are serving with City Year. And lastly, there’s over $3M in scholarships available exclusively to City Year alums through our partnerships with over 100 prestigious colleges and universities across the country.
To participate, you must:
- Have a college degree or have attended some college, have a high school diploma or GED
- Be able to dedicate 10 months to full-time service
- Be between the ages of 17 and 24
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident alien
- Agree to a background or security check
Previous experiences with service, tutoring, mentoring and leadership help strengthen candidacy.
