10th Annual MadRushConference

How to Apply-The 10^thAnnual MadRush Undergraduate Research Conference seeks undergraduate research and/or creative works in written, poster or web-based formats from any Humanities or Social Science discipline.  Interested students should submit a 100-150 word email abstract of their project to madrush@jmu.edu no later than 5:00 PM Monday, February 11, 2019.  Abstracts should be Word files and should include author, academic major, institution, title of presentation.  We welcome submission of panel sessions on related paper topics.

Presentation Format-Students selected for the conference will be notified by email in early March.  Presentations should be 15-20 minutes in length; there will be time for audience questions at the end of each conference session. Presentations may include PowerPoint slides for visual support.  Presenters are responsible for expenses incurred in attending the conference. Poster sessions will be delivered in a session format.

Conference fees-$25 (includes continental breakfast and lunch)

MadRushBest Paper Prizes/Publication in undergraduate journal

Students who have been accepted to present at the conference may submit their completed project for publication consideration in our undergraduate journal.  The top three papers will receive best paper prizes-1st place–$100; 2^ndplace–$75; 3^rdplace–$50.  The submission deadline for publication and prize consideration will be in late February.  Winners will be announced at the end of the conference.

Students who submit copies of their papers for the Best Paper Prizes will also have their papers reviewed for publication in our undergraduate research journal.  A group of faculty referees will select approximately eight papers for publication.

Once you have identified an internship/job you would like to apply for in Nittany Lion Careers, it is important to read the internship/job posting description carefully and make sure that you understand all that is required of a successful application to the opportunity of interest.

Located near the top of the posting on the right-hand side are important dates: the date the opportunity was posted on Nittany Lion Careers and the application deadline.

It is always best to submit your application to an internship posting in Nittany Lion Careers BEFORE the deadline listed. Here are a few reasons why:

• Many employers review internship applications as they are received. If you apply earlier than the deadline, you may get contacted earlier than other candidates.
• If an employer finds enough strong candidates before the deadline, they may pull the posting early, without notice.
• If you are submitting a résumé or other application materials through Nittany Lion Careers, every document you submit MUST be approved a staff member before you can officially submit your application. If you wait until the deadline (especially if the deadline is on the weekend or after work hours), you may miss out on an opportunity. It typically takes 48 business hours to review documents.
• Deadlines are occasionally estimated. If a posting is available online, without a specific deadline, we may provide a deadline estimate based on the specific semester dates.

Once you have reviewed the important dates and planned to meet the deadlines, it is important to understand how the application for the job or internship is structured. Applications for jobs and internships in Nittany Lion Careers are sometimes completed within Nittany Lion Careers; other opportunities may require you to apply through an external link to the organization’s website, and sometimes you must apply through both Nittany Lion Careers and the organization’s website.

Each internship posting in Nittany Lion Careers contains specific application instructions. Application instructions will typically be listed in the box that pops up after clicking the “Apply” button at the top right of the page. Additional instructions may also be in the body of the posting.

Attending Liberal Arts specific career events is a great way to gain skills for and knowledge about the job search process and to interact with recruiters from companies hiring Liberal Arts students. These events can be searched for and RSVP’d to in Nittany Lion Careers.

To begin, click on “Events” on the sidebar of the home page.

You will see a dropdown list appear, including:

• Career Fairs: career fair opportunities at Penn State
• Information Sessions/Events: sessions with visiting employers/recruiters
• Workshops: Career Enrichment Network and Liberal Arts related general workshops and information sessions (e.g. Lunch & Learn series, Etiquette Dinners, & more)

Click on the type of event you are interested in. In this example, we will look at “Workshops.”

After clicking on “Workshops,” you will see a list of all workshops and options to filter them by, including by keyword and by date. Click on “More filters.”

You will see several more available filters. To see Liberal Arts specific events, select “Managing Penn State Unit,” click the arrow to the right of “University Park Career Offices,” and click on “College of the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network.”

After you have finished adding all desired filters, click “Search.” You will now see a list of Liberal Arts specific career events.

Students can use the “Jobs” tab on the sidebar to view, filter, and apply for jobs and internships with the Nittany Lion Careers system. Click on the “Jobs” tab on the sidebar to get started.

Three drop down options will appear underneath the “Jobs” tab. Click on “Search for Jobs.”

If you scroll down on the “Search for Jobs” page, you will see information about jobs that “People in your major are interested in,” “Trending Jobs,” and “Latest Jobs.” You can view available opportunities by clicking through the jobs that appear on this first page. You can also search for opportunities by entering keywords or locations of interest.

You can filter jobs and internships to get a more specific list of opportunities available. To do so, click on “See All Jobs in System.”

Click on “Position Type” to make selections about the type of employment you are seeking: full-time, part-time, internship, volunteer, co-op, and more. Click “Apply” after you have selected all opportunities of interest.

Next, click on “More Filters.”

Scroll through the available filters and choose any relevant criteria to use to filter your search.

One particularly useful filter is the “Majors/Concentrations” filter, which will allow you to see available positions for which employers are seeking applicants within your major. Note that majors and concentrations are listed under general categories of fields and are not grouped by College.

• Most Liberal Arts majors: within categories under “Humanities, Languages, and Social Sciences”
• Economics: Business and Management à Economics
• Labor and Employment Relations: Business and Management à Labor and Employment Relations
• Social Data Analytics: Science and Mathematics à Mathematical Science à Social Data Analytics
• Communication Arts and Sciences: Communications and Media à Communication Arts and Sciences

Once you have filtered by all criteria of interest, click “Apply.”

If you have created filtered search results that you would like to receive periodic updates on, you can click on “Create Job Alert” at the top of the page after applying the relevant filters.

You can manage your Job Alerts by clicking on “Job Alerts” right above the “Create Job Alert” button.

This will open a window that will allow you to choose how often you would like to be notified about available jobs related to your filter(s). Choose the frequency you would like. You can click on the trash can icon to delete a job alert.

 

Career Enrichment Network Staff Profile Series

Name: Hope Bodenschatz

Work Title: Network Assistant

What does that mean? I assist with front of office duties (answering the phone and greeting students when they arrive for appointments or with questions). I am also responsible for reviewing, editing, and creating content for Career Enrichment Network social media and marketing as needed, brainstorming marketing ideas, assisting with event development and execution, and providing a student perspective.

Education: I am a third-year undergraduate student at Penn State pursuing bachelor’s degrees in Economics, Geography, and Political Science with minors in Mathematics and Sustainability Leadership.

Fun Fact: I am a fourth generation Penn Stater, so I definitely bleed blue and white!

Favorite Part of the Job: I love having an inside look at the myriad opportunities available to Liberal Arts students and seeing the power of a Penn State Liberal Arts education at work.

What tips do you have for Liberal Arts students? Whenever possible, seize opportunities to do things that push you outside your comfort zone. The classes, professors, and extracurricular opportunities that have challenged me the most have provided the most hard-fought and rewarding growth experiences at Penn State.
